Active Communities

The Maine West area features abundant outdoor recreation opportunities – often on lands protected by local land trusts and other groups. Unfortunately, while things have improved in recent years, the area also struggles with significant human health and wellness challenges.

By promoting active lifestyles, Maine West partners seek to improve local health outcomes, encourage youth and school groups to get outside and exercise, promote recreation on local conservation lands, and position rural communities as attractive places to live and raise families.

Second Nature Adventure Challenge - happening July through October!

Maine West developed the Second Nature Adventure Challenge to promote walking and hiking by people of all abilities.

In response to COVID-19 driven increases in food insecurity and related interest in outdoor recreation, Maine West is challenging people across the Oxford Hills, Bethel-Mahoosuc region, and River Valley area to earn cash rewards for local food pantries by working together to complete 300 outdoor adventures.

Once participants record 300 combined outdoor adventures, Maine West will contribute $3,000 to three area food pantries – $1,000 each. Beneficiaries of this first official Second Nature Adventure Challenge will include: Bethel Food Pantry, Servant's Heart Food Pantry, and the Agnes Gray Elementary School Food pantry
